The ego is our most surface identity: body, breath, mind, emotions, your story. These are qualities, like clothes that can be put on and taken off; they are temporary and will disappear, which is why they are called “empty”. The Real is what is eternal, continuous and cannot be destroyed. The true meaning of practice is to return to the Real—to the realm of the soul. From ego to True Self is called awakening; from True Self to Higher Self is called liberation.
The ego has three aspects, the soul (True Self) has three aspects, and the Higher Self has three aspects; evolution happens along these three lines. When identification with the body dissolves, we return to Being; as individual Being evolves, it returns to total Being—the Source. When the mind’s stream of thoughts dissolves, we return to Consciousness; as individual consciousness evolves, it returns to Universal Consciousness. When emotion dissolves, we find behind it the eternal Heart, eternal love; as individual love evolves, it returns to total love—God.
Knowing clearly what is happening inside the dream is awareness; attention is still turned outward. Knowing “there is an I who is dreaming” is awakening; attention has returned to yourself, but the dream still affects you. Waking on the bed, sitting up and stepping outside the dream is liberation: you have changed dimension, nothing in the dream can touch you, and yet you can participate fully in life and be completely moved by it, without belonging to the world or being bound by it.
Meditation is the delivery system to reality. To discover who you are, to awaken love, even to discover the source of the universe—none of this is outward; all of it is inward. Doing process work, healing yourself, manifesting, affirmations, visualisation and contemplation have value on the human level, but they are not true meditation. Ordinary meditation cultivates the Observer—discovering yourself by watching the breath, the body, the thoughts. It is located at the forehead, the centre of human consciousness. That is only a beginning: like rearranging the furniture in the same house so the dream feels a little more comfortable. True meditation does not improve your dream; it wakes you up and walks you out.
The centre of the soul is at the back of the head, so we gather there rather than at the forehead. Of the soul’s three aspects—Consciousness, Being and Heart—practice must begin with Consciousness, because Consciousness is the capacity to recognise; it is like the sun, whose light falls on Being so Being wakes, and on the Heart so the Heart wakes. True awakening needs no mirror: you do not know “I am” by watching an object, but directly from within. You must first clearly awaken to who you are: the wave must awaken to itself before it can return to the ocean and become the ocean. Entering expansion without a clear I is only a vague, spaced-out state, not real awakening.
First awaken the soul. Once awake, the soul surrenders—surrenders to Universal Consciousness, until one day it becomes Universal Consciousness and its identity is no longer the individual but the whole. That is already true liberation; you have walked out of the dream. To go beyond, keep surrendering, back to the origin of Universal Consciousness—the Creator, the last and largest container. For complete liberation, the next step is No-Self: no boundary of any kind, breaking through even the largest container, becoming truly infinite. Awakening and liberation are not philosophy and not belief; they are solid, real, living states. With a method, a teaching, a route and a map, you can practise your way there—if you are willing to do the work.
